Abdullah Threatens To Reject Afghan Election Results

Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah says he will reject the final vote count because his charges of massive fraud have failed to stop the ballot-counting process.

Abdullah demanded on June 18 a halt to the vote counting, for Independent Election Commission (IEC) head Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhail to be fired, and for the UN to oversee ballot counting.

Amarkhail said on June 19 that the vote-counting process is continuing with Afghan and international monitors and the IEC is not working for a specific candidate.

He said if anyone has evidence of his fraudulent activity he will resign his post.

Preliminary results from the June 14 election are to be released on July 2, after which a period for complaints exists before final results are issued.

But Abdullah says he doesn't consider the IEC or the Election Complaints Commission to be legitimate.
