Russian officials say Abkhaz leader Sergei Bagapsh, who has led the Georgian breakaway region since 2005, has died.

Russian reports say he passed away on May 29 at a Moscow hospital, days after having undergone a lung operation. He was 62.

Abkhazia, together with South Ossetia, fell out of Georgian control following its August 2008 war with Russia and declared independence.

The move was welcomed by Russia but not recognized by Georgia or the West.
