Activists Say Bomb Explosion Hits Security Area In Damsacus

Syrian opposition activists say a large bomb has exploded in an area that houses security and army compounds west of Umayyad Square in central Damascus.

Islamist groups Ahfad al-Rasoul and Ansar al-Islam said in a joint statement that they detonated bombs in a compound belonging to State Security in the area on October 11.

Ansar al-Islam claimed responsibility for a bomb attack last month on the army's Chief of Staff headquarters in Umayyad Square, which started a large fire in the building.

State television reported the blast as being a "terrorist attack."

It said that two people were wounded in the explosion.
