WATCH: A suicide bomber set off explosives near a bus carrying military personnel in Kabul on July 2, killing at least eight officers and wounding 13. At least five civilians were also wounded in the attack.

Afghan authorities say a suicide bomber killed at least eight military officers and wounded 13 when he blew himself up near a bus carrying military personnel in the capital, Kabul.

Hashmat Stanekzai, a spokesman for Kabul's police chief, said the bus had been the bomber's target.

At least five civilians were also wounded in the attack on July 2.

The Taliban used a recognized Twitter account to claim responsibility for the blast.

The explosion happened in the heavily secured downtown area near Kabul University amid heightened political tensions over the disputed second round of the Afghan presidential election.

It was the first attack during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
