Attack Reported On Coalition Base In Kandahar Province

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- Afghan officials say an attack involving multiple suicide bombers at a base in the southern Kandahar Province has killed at least one NATO soldier.

The attack on the NATO-led coalition occurred in the Zarai district on January 20.

The chief of that district, Haji Jamal Agha told RFE/RL's Afghan Service that all the attackers died when they detonated their bombs or were killed by NATO soldiers.

Javid Faisal, a spokesman for the Kandahar governor, said on his Twitter account that nine suicide bombers and attackers were killed.

An unnamed spokesman for NATO said the attack involved a suicide car bombing, suicide vests, and small-arms fire.
