Karzai Travels To Qatar To Push Peace Process

Afghan President Hamid Karzai
Afghan President Hamid Karzai is in Qatar for talks with officials on the possibility of the Gulf state hosting future peace talks between Kabul and the Taliban.

Karzai, who arrived in Doha on June 9, has recently endorsed a proposal for the Taliban to open an office in the city, saying it could open the door to "direct contacts" between Kabul and the insurgents.

In the past, the Taliban has refused to negotiate with Karzai's government, calling it a puppet of the United States.

Karzai has said that any peace process depends on establishing clearly who would represent the Taliban and ensuring that Karzai's appointees play a central role.

The NATO-led international coalition plans to withdraw its combat forces from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
