Five Afghans Killed In Twin Bombings In Helmand

Afghan officials say at least five people, including two police officers, have been killed by two bombs in the southern province of Helmand.

Ummar Zawaq, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said three civilians were killed when their car struck a roadside bomb.

Zawaq said two police officers who had rushed to the scene to help the victims died when a second bomb went off.

The police officers who died were members of the elite Afghan National Civil Order Police, who get special training from NATO forces.

The spokesman says a third officer was wounded in the blast.

It was the first reported attack in Afghanistan during the holy month of Ramadan.

The Taliban had earlier vowed they would continue attacks on Afghan and foreign troops during Ramadan.
