U.S. officials say Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is due to name retired diplomat Marc Grossman to replace the late Richard Holbrooke as the special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"The Washington Post" reported on February 14 that Clinton is expected to make the announcement in a speech at the Asia Society in New York on February 18.

Grossman spent three decades at the State Department. During that time, he served as assistant secretary of state for Europe, ambassador to Turkey, and in 2005 was undersecretary for political affairs.

He is currently the vice president of the Washington-based Cohen Group, a consulting firm headed by former U.S. Secretary of Defense William Cohen.
