The suspect in a shooting rampage earlier this month in the southwestern U.S. state of Arizona that led to the deaths of six people has pleaded “not guilty.”

Twenty-two-year-old Jared Lee Loughner was charged with three counts of attempted murder and more charges are expected. He could ultimately face the death penalty.

Those killed in the January 8 shooting in the city of Tucson included a 9-year-old girl and an Arizona federal judge. A U.S. congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords, was severely wounded.

Giffords has now begun what will likely be months of recovery at a hospital in Texas.
