Armenia Releases Video Of Russian Soldier Charged In Massacre

YEREVAN -- Armenia's Investigative Committee has released interrogation footage of a Russian soldier charged with murdering seven members of an Armenian family on January 12.

The muted video was broadcast by Armenian media late on January 22.

It shows Private Valery Permyakov and the blurred faces of two men, along with an apparent translation of the interrogation in Armenian subtitles.

The Investigative Committee said the interrogators were Armenians and that an interpreter and Permyakov's lawyer were present.

Russia guards detained Permyakov at the Armenian-Turkish border a day after six family members were found shot dead at a residence near Russia’s military base in Gyumri.

A six-month-old boy who was stabbed died on January 19 in hospital.

The massacre sparked angry protests in Yerevan and Gyumri, with thousands of Armenians demanding Permyakov face trial in an Armenian court.

Armenian and Russian authorities are conducting a joint investigation.

A Russian military court will try Permyakov in Armenia.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
