'Catherine, Meet Tomislav'

Catherine Ashton (left) and Tomislav Nikolic finally meet on June 14 -- all's well that ends well.
Catherine Ashton, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, has had a lot on her plate lately.

In between her wardrobe diplomacy with Tehran and proposals to boost even greater economic ties with Pakistan, Ashton suffered a minor behind-the-scenes protocol lapse shortly before meeting Serbia’s newly elected president, Tomislav Nikolic, on June 14.

In a video released by South East Europe TV Exchanges, a television news service providing EU affairs coverage to Balkan broadcasters, Ashton appears to be boldly walking toward a room where she is meant to welcome Nikolic, then backtracking when she realizes she would not be able to recognize him.

It also appears that Robert Cooper, the European Union mediator for Kosovo and Serbia, is just as confused as Ashton.

Luckily, someone had a photo.

About This Blog

Written by RFE/RL editors and correspondents, Transmission serves up news, comment, and the odd silly dictator story.
