A Pakistani government official says at least 15 Islamist militants have been killed and several more have been injured in a shootout between two rival Taliban groups in Pakistan's tribal region near the Afghan border.
The battle took place in Orakzai district, where a months-long Pakistani security operation has failed to completely root out Islamist insurgents.
Orakzai is believed to be a stronghold of Taliban and al-Qaeda. Thousands of Pakistani troops had launched a major operation in the district, and claimed to have killed hundreds of insurgents, but rebels still control some areas of the mountainous district.
