The Week Ahead is a detailed listing of key events of the coming week affecting RFE/RL's broadcast region.

MONDAY, September 13:

Georgia/Russia: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) holds public hearings in a human rights case concerning racial discrimination lodged by Georgia against Russia in The Hague (to September 17).


Russia/Kyrgyzstan: Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov and his Kyrgyz counterpart Abibulla Kudaiberbiev meet in Moscow to discuss the possible creation of a Russian military training center in Kyrgyzstan.

Serbia: Serbian President Boris Tadic pays a two-day official visit to Estonia.

South Caucasus: UN expert on the human rights of internally displaced persons Walter Kaelin visits Georgia and Armenia (to September 18).

Ukraine: Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych visits Brussels, meets with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso to discuss issues related to an EU-Ukraine association agreement.

UN: 15th session of the Human Rights Council starts in Geneva (to October 1).


TUESDAY, September 14:

Azerbaijan: Baku hosts a summit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, and Romanian President Traian Basescu to discuss a project of gas supplies on the route Azerbaijan-Georgia-Romania.

Kazakhstan/Ukraine: Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev visits Kyiv to discuss possible gas supplies from Kazakhstan to Ukraine with his counterpart, Viktor Yanukovych (to September 15).

UN: 65th ordinary session of the UN General Assembly opens in New York.



WEDNESDAY, September 15:

Russia: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev holds talks with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg in the northern Russian city of Murmansk. Russia and Norway plan to sign an agreement on their borders in the Barents Sea.

Turkey: Istanbul hosts the 10th summit of Turkish-speaking countries. Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan are expected to attend the Istanbul summit at the presidential level.


THURSDAY, September 16:

Russia: IX International Investment Forum begins in Sochi. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is expected to address the forum (to September 19).

Tatarstan: Sixth Kazan International Muslim Film Festival opens (to September 19).

Ukraine/Russia: Ukraine's Foreign Minister Kostyantyn Hryshchenko travels to Moscow for a two-day working visit, meets with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.

FRIDAY, September 17:

Armenia: Armenian opposition parties are expected to hold a rally.

Russia/Ukraine: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yanukovych take part in the St. Petersburg-Kyiv rally and hold a meeting in the Tver region of Russia.
