The Week Ahead is a detailed listing of key events of the coming week affecting RFE/RL's broadcast region.

MONDAY, October 18:

Afghanistan: U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan General David Petraeus is expected to attend an International Contact Group meeting, which brings together more than 30 special representatives for Afghanistan and Pakistan (SRAPs), including more than 10 from Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) member states.

Azerbaijan: Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) delegation visits Azerbaijan to monitor the run-up to November parliamentary elections.

Central Asia/Afghanistan: Conference of the UN Special Program for the Economies of Central Asia discusses regional approaches to the stabilization of Afghanistan (to October 19).

Iraq/Iran: Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki visits Tehran to hold talks with the country's officials on major political and security issues.

Russia/France/Germany: French President Nicolas Sarkozy hosts German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to discuss security and the upcoming G20 summit.

Russia/CIS: Fourth annual international conference for alternative investments in Russia & the CIS brings together main industry leaders to discuss current alternative investment opportunities (to October 20).

Ukraine: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez visits Kyiv.


TUESDAY, October 19:

Armenia: Yerevan hosts the 2010 forum for the future of democracy entitled “Democracy In Europe – Principles And Challenges” (to October 21).

Iran: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, while visiting Tehran, is scheduled to meet President Mahmud Ahmadinejad and other senior Iranian officials.

Russia: A Munich Security Conference Core Group Meeting starts in Moscow (to October 20).

WEDNESDAY, October 20:

Bosnia-Herzegovina: President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy visits Sarajevo.

CIS
: Azerbaijan hosts the third Baku International Conference of CIS States to discuss the role of financial institutions in the economies of the CIS states” (to October 23).

CIS: Ukraine hosts Council of CIS Defense Ministers meeting.

Iraq: Iraq’s Oil Ministry is set to hold a public auction for the right to develop three gas fields.

Russia: Russia's State Duma plans to consider the country’s draft federal budget for 2011–13 in its first reading.

UN: World Statistics Day.

U.S./Russia: U.S.-Russian innovation forum From Silicon Valley To Skolkovo starts in San Francisco. A delegation representing Tatarstan to participate (to October 21).

THURSDAY, October 21:

Turkmenistan: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev makes a working visit to Ashgabat (to October 22).



FRIDAY, October 22:

Russia: Moscow hosts the Millionaire Fair, an exhibition of luxury products (to October 24).


SATURDAY, October 23:

Armenia/Russia: Yekaterinburg hosts a session of the Armenian-Russian intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation.

UN: United Nations Day.
