Iraqi security forces inspect the site of a car-bomb attack in a Baghdad neighborhood on August 28.

A car bomb has killed at least eight people and wounded more than 25 others at a vegetable market in a predominantly Shi'ite neighborhood of the Iraqi capital, officials say.

Police said the vehicle packed with explosives detonated on August 28 at the Jamila market in the Sadr City district of Bahgdad.

The extremist group Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility in a statement carried by its affiliated Amaq news agency.

The victims included members of the country’s security forces.

It was not immediately clear if a suicide bomber had driven the vehicle to the target or if it was a parked car bomb.

The attack comes as U.S.-backed Iraqi forces are in the final stages of recapturing the northern town of Tal Afar from IS fighters.

IS militants have carried out a string of attacks in Baghdad in the past.
