Hugo Chavez’s brother says the Venezuelan president is not in a coma and is responding well to cancer treatment in Cuba.

Adan Chavez said in a statement: "Reports that the president is in a coma and that the family is discussing ending life support are totally false."

Adan Chavez, who is governor of the Venezuelan state of Barinas, said the president "continues to respond well to his medical care and to make daily progress in his recovery."

Hugo Chavez, 58, hasn’t been seen or spoken publicly since his fourth surgery for cancer in Cuba on December 11.

The illness forced Chavez to last week miss his scheduled inauguration to another presidential term.

The Venezuelan government said earlier that Chavez is battling a severe respiratory infection.
