GROZNY, Russia -- The head of Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has reached agreement with the ruling family of Bahrain on founding a new airline.

Kadyrov's official website said preliminary agreement was reached on November 16 during a meeting between Kadyrov, who is touring the Middle East, and Sheikh Favas al-Khalifa, a representative of Bahrain's royal family.

No more details were available.

The sides said final agreements would be signed soon and that Bahrain would also finance new aircraft and equipment for Grozny's airport in an effort to turn it into an international hub.

The agreements reportedly include plans to start additional flights from Grozny to the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
