China's President Xi Jinping, on a visit to Russia, has hailed the strong partnership between the two countries.

Meeting with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on March 23, Xi said the results of his visit had far exceeded his expectations.

In a speech to Russian students, he said strong Chinese-Russian ties are a guarantee of the strategic power balance in the world.

He also warned against foreign interference in the affairs of other nations.

The visit to Russia is Xi's first foreign trip since he became president last week.

During talks with President Vladimir Putin on March 22, Xi said they had agreed "to strengthen mutual support."

Russian and Chinese officials signed a raft of agreements, including a deal on Russian oil deliveries and a memorandum on building a new gas pipeline to China.
