Croatian Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic has called on the country's Balkan neighbors to follow Zagreb's example and join the EU.

He said Croatia, due to join the EU in mid-2013, found the accession process "the main motivator" for undertaking social and political reforms.

Speaking to the UN General Assembly in New York on September 28, he added, "We want our neighbors in southeast Europe to undertake the same demanding but rewarding road."

He also said Croatia stands ready "to share our experiences and contribute constructively to the reforms in neighboring countries based on democracy and European values."
