Croatian nationalists have been staging anti-EU demonstrations ahead of an upcoming referendum on the country joining the economic bloc.
Croatian police have clashed with a group of nationalist protesters who tried to take down an EU flag on the eve of the country's membership referendum.

The clash occurred at the end of a protest rally by about 1,000 mostly war veterans and rightwing protesters opposed to Croatia joining the EU.

Several people were injured and police arrested at least three demonstrators.

The incident raises tensions ahead of a referendum on January 22 when Croatian citizens will answer the question: "Do you support the membership of the Republic of Croatia in the European Union?"

Croatia signed an accession treaty with the EU last year and is set to join the 27-nation bloc in July 2013.
