Czechs Issue International Warrant For Qatar Royal

A Czech official says a Prague court has issued an international arrest warrant for a Qatari royal family member convicted of sexually abusing minors and later extradited to his country.

Hamad bin Abdallah bin Thani Al Thani was convicted in May 2005 of sexually abusing underage girls in the Czech Republic and sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison.

Al Thani had lived in the Czech Republic for 10 years.

He was extradited to Qatar before a ruling by an appeals court, after Qatar assured Czech authorities that he would be prosecuted there.

Czech authorities reopened the trial in 2009 after Qatar failed to prosecute him.

Prague municipal court spokeswoman Martina Lhotakova said the warrant was issued after other options to force Al Thani to face trial here failed.
