Officials in Russia's volatile North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan say local police have killed two suspected militants.
Security troops started a counterterrorism operation in Daghestan's southwestern Caspian Sea port city of Derbent shortly after midnight on November 21.
Two suspected militants were shot dead after they refused to leave an apartment building and tried to escape the site shooting at the security troops.
One of those killed was identified as Velibeg Veliev, 26, a suspected member of an illegally armed group.
Violence is common in Russia's North Caucasus region, which includes the restive republics of Daghestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Ingushetia, and Chechnya.
Islamic militants and criminal groups routinely target Russian military personnel and local officials.
