Detained Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was allowed to meet his wife over the weekend, his first family visit since he was arrested in early April.

Relatives said Lu Qing was summoned to a police station and taken by police to meet briefly with her husband at an unidentified location on May 15.

Ai told his wife he was well and had not been mistreated, but remained unclear about the charges against him.

Ai, 53, is a vocal critic of the government.

Chinese authorities have said he is being investigated on suspicion of economic crimes.

His arrest came amid a crackdown on dissent and prompted criticism from many Western nations, including the United States and the European Union.
