Egypt's new government has named at least 18 new provincial governors as it reverses appointments by deposed Islamist President Muhammad Morsi.
The new appointments, half of them retired generals, replace officials who were largely members of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Earlier on August 13, police fired tear gas to break up clashes in Cairo between Morsi loyalists and supporters of the military-installed government.
Media reports say the clashes began when a few thousand Morsi supporters marched toward government ministries and residents of the area threw stones at them.
Egypt's military ousted Morsi on July 3, following days of protests demanding his resignation.
Morsi supporters have set up two protest camps in Cairo and have held near daily demonstrations calling for his reinstatement.
More than 250 people have been killed in street clashes since Morsi's removal.
