Egypt's public prosecutor has reportedly ordered former President Muhammad Morsi and 34 other Islamists to stand trial on charges of conspiring with foreign groups with the intention of carrying out terrorist operations.

The prosecutor said in a statement that the defendants are accused of conspiring with Hamas to perpetrate "hostile acts" during the uprising against Morsi's predecessor, Hosni Mubarak, in early 2011.

The alleged crimes involve a prison break that freed Morsi and other members of the group during Egypt's 2011 uprising.

Fourteen inmates died in that attack.

Morsi is already standing trial for inciting violence during protests outside the presidential palace a year ago when he was still in office.

He was deposed in July by the army following mass protests against his rule.
