Egypt's state news agency, MENA, says the head of Egypt's ruling military council has contacted Saudi Arabia's government to discuss its "surprise decision" to withdraw its ambassador to Cairo.
The report on April 28 says Egypt's Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi was working to "heal the rift" that has resulted from the decision" and to "contain the situation."
Saudi Arabia says it has closed its embassy and recalled its ambassador because of "unjust" street protests in Cairo over the arrest of an Egyptian human rights lawyer, Ahmed el-Gezawi.
Saudi authorities say Gezawi was detained for allegedly insulting the kingdom's monarch and trying to smuggle antianxiety drugs into the kingdom.
They say attempts by demonstrators to storm the Saudi embassy and consulates in Cairo had "threatened the safety" of staff there.
