Estonia's government said on August 8 that full customs controls have been introduced at the Baltic country's border with Russia, replacing random border checks. The measure was introduced with immediate effect at the road and rail border crossings in Narva, Koidula, and Luhamaa. For those crossing the border on foot, full control will mean checking each person and their luggage. For those traveling by car, both the vehicle and the items inside it will be checked. Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal said the move was aimed at preventing the transport and transit through Estonia of goods subjected to European Union sanctions.
