European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has warned that the continent is facing an upsurge of populism, chauvinism and extremist ideas.
In a radio interview, he called on Europe's political leaders to fight against the "manipulation of fears and irrational arguments" that he said were fuelling populism in many countries.
He also said he worries about growing nationalism and xenophobia.
