More Fighting Reported in Eastern Ukraine

Ukraine’s military said on May 6 that five of its soldiers were killed and 12 wounded during the previous 24 hours amid reports of more fighting in eastern Ukraine.

A Ukrainian military spokesman said pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine had violated a cease-fire deal more than 42 times.

Meanwhile, pro-Russian separatists say government tanks and artillery fired dozens of times in eastern Ukraine during the previous 24 hours in what they described as violations of a February cease-fire deal.

It said government troops also fired mortar rounds and rocket-propelled grenade launchers in the east.

The separatists said a government artillery barrage damaged a natural-gas pipeline in eastern Ukraine and that other shells struck Donetsk airport and village houses in the east.

Based on reporting by Reuters, AFP, and TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
