A suspect detained for allegedly stabbing two people to death in a knife attack in the western Finnish city of Turku is being investigated for murder with possible terrorist intent, police said on August 19.
"Due to information received during the night, the Turku stabbings are now being investigated as murders with terrorist intent," the National Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.
Police have identified the suspect as 18-year-old Moroccan citizen. Following the attacks on August 18, the suspect was shot in the thigh, arrested, and is currently hospitalized.
Four other individuals were detained in relation to the case, although their involvement in the incident is not clear.
The dead are Finnish citizens, while the eight injured include one Italian national and two Swedes.
Police said that they are working with the Finnish Immigration Service and international authorities in their investigation.
