Four Afghan Police Killed While Defusing Mine

A police chief and three other officers were killed as they were defusing an explosive device on the side of a road in southeastern Afghanistan.

Abdul Azim Farooq, the head of Waghaz district in Ghazni Province, said police chief Mohammad Qasem had gone with four other policemen to remove a roadside mine planted by the Taliban.

The five successfully defused the mine, but another explosive device under the mine detonated while they were removing the defused mine.

Ghazni's deputy police chief Assadullah Safi said the fifth policeman present at the scene was wounded and taken to the hospital.

In a separate incident, gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on a vehicle carrying Afghan National Army personnel in the western city of Herat, killing two officers and wounding three others.
