Two More Ex-Ministers Detained In Georgia

Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, whose coalition won the October elections.
Two former ministers and four other people have reportedly been arrested in Georgia as part of a corruption investigation.

Those detained include the former finance and energy minister, Aleksandre Khetaguri, and former education and justice minister, Nika Gvaramia, who is now head of the independent television channel Rustavi-2.

Others reportedly detained include the head of a major electricity company, Telasi.

The Finance Ministry said the former ministers were detained in connection with the alleged illegal transfer of $1 million and other violations.

They are the latest in a series of arrests of former officials since the coalition led by Bidzina Ivanishvili, the current prime minister, won October's elections, ousting the party of President Mikheil Saakashvili.

Saakashvili has condemned the December 19 arrests, calling the charges "absolutely fake," and warning of "lawlessness."
