A Russian citizen has been detained in Germany on suspicion of plotting to carry out an Islamic extremist attack using explosives.

The German Prosecutor-General's Office said on August 22 that a 31-year-old man, identified as Magomed-Ali C., had been detained in Berlin and that his home had been searched by the authorities.

Prosecutors say that in October 2016, he stored a "significant quantity" of the explosive TATP at his apartment in order to carry out an attack in Germany.

Authorities said the arrest was linked to investigations in France against a man named Clement Baur, who was arrested in Marseille in April 2017 on suspicion of planning an attack.

Prosecutors say Germany's Federal Court of Justice is expected to issue a ruling on August 23 about Magomed-Ali C.'s pretrial detention.
