Gunmen Kill 5 Protesters In Yemeni Capital

Yemeni antigovernment protesters react angrily to the news that President Ali Abdullah Saleh had signed a power transfer deal on November 23.
At least five people were killed when armed men in plain clothes opened fire on protesters in the center of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa,

President Ali Abdullah Saleh has ordered an investigation into the violence, which came on November 24 -- one day after he signed a deal to hand over power.

Protesters have denounced the deal mediated by Gulf Arab states under which Saleh would be granted immunity from prosecution in exchange for handing over power to the vice president.

Thousands of Yemenis took to the streets in Sanaa and the southern city of Taiz on November 24 to protest the deal.

Yemen has seen 10 months of protests aimed at ending Saleh's 33-year authoritarian rule.
