India Concerned Over China Running Strategic Pakistani Port

India has expressed apprehension over Pakistan handing over the management of a strategic Arabian Sea port to China.

Speaking to journalists on February 6, Indian Defense Minister A.K. Anthony said that Islamabad's decision to hand over the Gwadar port to a state-run Chinese company last week was "a matter of concern."

Beijing has invested more than $100 million in developing the deep-sea port close to the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil-shipping lane.

Despite warming trade relations, Beijing and New Delhi are considered traditional rivals.

India has been wary of growing Chinese influence in South Asia.

China has funded a port in Sri Lanka and has offered Bangladesh a similar project.

Islamabad is a key Chinese ally and a traditional archrival of India.
