Suspected Rebels Kill Two Police In Indian Kashmir

Indian police say suspected militants have killed two policemen in Srinagar, the capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Police said on June 22 that the militants fired from close range at the two policemen, who were in a busy market area in the capital.

A young woman was wounded in the shoot-out.

Police said security forces had cordoned off the area and were looking for the suspects.

The attack comes despite a high-security alert in Srinagar ahead of a two-day visit by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh beginning on June 25.

India and Pakistan have fought two wars over Kashmir, a majority-Muslim region that is divided between the two neighbors.
