India Accused Of Shelling Kashmir Border Area

Updated

India is being accused of killing a Pakistani civilian with an "unprovoked" attack in Kashmir.

It would be the latest in a series of recent clashes in the disputed Himalayan region.

A Pakistani military official is quoted as saying Indian troops fired shells on August 12 in three areas along the de facto border, known as the Line of Control.

The official added that Pakistani troops "responded to Indian firing."

However, an Indian Army commander said Indian troops were responding to unprovoked firing from Pakistan.

Tensions along the border that divides Kashmir flared on August 6 when five Indian soldiers were ambushed and killed.

New Delhi blamed the Pakistani military for the attack, while Islamabad denied involvement.

On August 11, Pakistani and Indian forces exchanged gunfire in Kashmir, further destabilizing a 10-year cease-fire in the disputed Muslim-majority region.
