TBILISI -- Inmates of a prison in Georgia's western region of Imereti are reportedly on a hunger strike.
Lawyer Robinzon Khurtsilva, who represents inmates Levan Bobokhidze, told Rustavi-2 television on March 11 that his client and a former municipal governor of the city of Khoni, Zurab Jibukhaia, are among the hunger strikers.
According to Khurtsilva, the inmates are protesting against the postponement of their trials and demanding a meeting with lawmaker Eka Beselia, chairwoman of the Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights and Civil Integration.
Khurtsilva did not give an exact number of those on hunger strike in Prison No. 2 in the Imereti region capital, Kutaisi.
Bobokhidze, who was a member of the municipal board in Khoni, and Jibukhaia, were arrested a year ago on embezzlement charges, which they deny.
