Iranian President Meets Castros In Havana

The Iranian president has met with his Cuban counterpart and his older brother and predecessor during a visit in Havana.

Hassan Rohani sat down with Cuba's 90-year-old retired president, Fidel Castro, on September 19.

Rohani met separately with President Raul Castro, who took over leadership of Cuba's government in 2006.

Officials did not comment on the talks.

Iran's president travelled to Cuba after attending the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Venezuela.

Rohani said ahead of the one-day Cuba visit that he wanted to stop in the communist island, a "friendly and revolutionary country," on his way to the UN General Assembly in New York.

Tehran has condemned the U.S. embargo on Cuba, and Havana has supported Iran's right to a civilian nuclear program.

Based on reporting by AFP and AP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
