Iranian Police Seize 11 Tons Of Narcotics

Police in Iran have seized more than 11 tons of narcotics along the Pakistani border in what they say is the country's single biggest drug bust.

Iranian media cite border police chief Brigadier General Hossein Zolfaqari as saying troops seized 10 tons of opium and one ton of hashish in a 36-hour operation targeting a drug-trafficking ring in the Jakigour area of Sistan-Baluchistan.

One of the traffickers was reported killed in clashes during the operation.

Several more were wounded, while others were able to escape into Pakistan.

Iran, which shares a 1,700-kilometer border with Afghanistan and Pakistan, is part of a key transit route for drugs destined for Europe and the Middle East.

Police say they have seized more than 350 tons of drugs since the start of 2012.
