In U.S., 99-Year-Old Woman From Iran Becomes Citizen

A 99-year-old woman who was born in Iran has obtained U.S. citizenship in Los Angeles,15 years after moving to the United States.

Khatoun Khoykani joined about 3,700 other people on July 26 for a naturalization ceremony at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

"I’m so excited, I can't even think," Khoykani said, speaking in Farsi.

Khoykani left her native Iran in the early 1980s, shortly after the country’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Los Angeles says Khoykani’s achievement is rare.

It says only 27 people older than 100 have become naturalized U.S. citizens in the past 50 years.
