Iranian Supreme Leader Calls For Closer Ties With Arab Neighbors

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has called for better ties with Gulf Arab neighbors, saying regional security "depends on good relations among all countries of the region."

Iranian state television quoted Khamenei as making the comments during a meeting with Kuwait’s emir, Sheik Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, in Tehran on June 2.

Khamenei warned regional countries of the "high price" they would eventually pay for supporting extremist Sunni Muslim groups fighting Tehran's key ally Syria.

He also expressed hope for "a new chapter" of economic relations between Iran and Kuwait.

The report said the two countries signed six agreements, including one related to security, during the two-day visit of the emir.

Western-allied Arab nations in the Gulf Cooperation Council have been wary of Iran's influence in the region.
