Bomb Attacks On Iraqi Pilgrims Kill At Least 16

A series of attacks on Shi'ite Muslim pilgrims in Baghdad have left at least 16 people dead.

The evening attacks included two suicide bombings and a car-bomb attack.

They struck as worshippers prepared to mark the death of holy Shi'ite figure Imam Musa al-Kadhim.

Thousands more pilgrims are expected in Baghdad for two days of rituals marking Kadhim's death in 799 AD that peak on May 25.

One of the suicide attackers was reportedly dressed in an all-black women's robe, a security spokesman said.

Shi'ite pilgrims are often targeted by Sunni militants who regard them as apostates.

Authorities have imposed heavy security measures in Baghdad, including the closure of roads in some cases.
