Iraqi Kurds Press Ahead With Independence Vote

Voters in northern Iraq's semiautonomous Kurdish region are due to cast ballots in an independence referendum on September 25. Iraq's parliament calls the vote unconstitutional, and neighboring Turkey and Iran also oppose the referendum, concerned their own sizable Kurdish populations will be encouraged to break away. The United States and other Western powers have advised Kurdistan's Regional Government to cancel the vote, fearing that it could spark a new conflict with Baghdad and undermine the battle against Islamic State militants.
