Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan Kan Survives No-Confidence Vote

Japan's Prime Minister Naoto Kan has survived a no-confidence vote in parliament.

The motion against Kan was filed by the conservative, main opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and two smaller parties.

Kan's government has been criticized for a slow and inappropriate response to the devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11 and the crisis at the Fukushima nuclear power plant where the disaster triggered leaks of radioactive substances.

Before the vote on June 2, Kan had said he would step down once his government has dealt with the aftermath of the March disaster and nuclear crisis.
