KABUL -- Afghanistan's Foreign Ministry has confirmed that 21 Afghan nationals died when a ship carrying illegal immigrants capsized off the Greek coast earlier this month.
The boat which had set off from Turkey capsized in stormy weather on December 13.
Janan Musazai, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry, said 21 bodies have been handed over to Afghan officials who had arrived in Greece to receive them.
They would be repatriated in coming days.
The only survivor from the incident, Murtaza Muhammadi, told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan that the vessel was a fishing boat meant to carry 10 to 15 people.
He said there were women and children among the victims, including at least two toddlers.
