Afghan President Hamid Karzai is due in Moscow at the start of a two-day visit to Russia.
Karzai is hoping to use the trip to strengthen economic cooperation between Afghanistan and Russia.
According to Karzai's office, the Afghan leader is also looking for Russian fuel to help deal with an Iranian blockade of Afghan fuel deliveries on the Iran-Afghan border.
Karzai will also be hoping to deepen Russian cooperation in fighting narcotics trafficking. Afghanistan is the world's leading producer of opium.
