The Rites Stuff: A Dungan Wedding In Kazakhstan

The Dungans are a Muslim community of Chinese origin, who settled in Kazakhstan at the end of the 19th century. A Dungan wedding is a laborious and costly affair, which requires the careful observance of many rites and traditions. Roza and Shafur got married in the village of Sortobe, close to the border with Kyrgyzstan. This is their story.
