Kazakhstan abruptly said on June 21 that it will stop hosting talks aimed at resolving the Syrian conflict that erupted 12 years ago. The decision was a surprise to Russia and other participants, including Turkey, Syria, and Iran at the wrapping up of the 20th round of talks held in the capital, Astana, the venue for negotiations since 2017. Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry said that the talks have fulfilled their mission, but Aleksandr Lavrentyev, Russia’s envoy to Syria, said that Astana's decision came as a complete surprise.
