Alleged IMU Member Arrested In Osh

OSH, Kyrgyzstan -- An alleged member of the banned Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) has been arrested in Kyrgyzstan's southern city of Osh.

Osh police officials told RFE/RL on February 24 that a 32-year-old local citizen -- whose name was not disclosed -- was arrested at Osh international airport on his arrival from Russia.

Investigators say the man had been trained in a terrorist camp in Pakistan and had lived for some time in Turkey.

He is suspected of planning terrorist acts in Kyrgyzstan and of recruiting fighters for the Islamic insurgency in Syria.

Last week, Osh law-enforcement officers arrested six alleged members of a terrorist ring and charged them with plotting an assault against local officials, public appeals for and justification of terrorism, and illegal possession of arms, explosives, and extremist literature.
